I’d like to get someone a gift whisky for Christmas, but if I’m honest I have no clue. After some subtle questioning and online research I’ve decided on an Octomore, but can’t decide which one. I’m leaning toward either 02.2, OBA or the micro provanance series, 3 20cl bottles of 0022, 4468 and 4819. (The latter mainly as it will give three to try and also contains the 13 year old)

Any help deciding would be wonderful please? Or even just explaining the real difference between these?

Thanks so much

Each bottling although very similar will vary it peat level and taste which is part of what makes the Octomore series of whiskies interesting to those that like it. I am sure the set of 3 would be very welcomed by the recipient.

Hi there, not sure how much info you have or want, but this might be useful!

The numbering system shows the style of the Octomore:

.1 is ex-bourbon casks
.2 ex-wine cask maturation
.3 is Islay barley)
.4 is virgin oak

The 2.2 (orpheus) is matured in casks that previously held Petrus amd is delicious. The 4.2 comus is a cracker too (Chateau d'Yquem sauternes). The OBA is a Black Art bottling and is also excellent. You are looking at the top/expensive collectable end of octomore though!

The MP6 series you mention is also very good. The 0022 13yro is superb.

For me, I would have the 2.2 (money aside) but if I was paying secondary market prices it's a harder decision. The 8.2 and 8.3 are both great too. And much cheaper! (Could buy both?!)

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the replies.

I want to get something the recipient probably wouldn’t buy themselves, which is one of the reasons these interested me. This also sways me toward the OBA as with so few bottles it’s also potentially the only chance they would get to try it, although of what little I know they are a fan of gimmikey things and they may view OBA as that. Reviews of 02.2 seem unanimous that it’s a good bottle.

Are both of these similar in terms of smoke/peatiness would you say at all? Or is one of the two bottles moreso?

I’ll have a look at the other two you mention too, Thankyou!
