Ardbeg 1972-1975 H2H

Tasted in the following order

1 – Ardbeg 1972 28 year 50.1% for Alambic Classic Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask, 234 bottles
2 - Ardbeg 1972 29 year 50%, sherry finish, Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask, 432 bottles
3 – Ardbeg 1973 15 year 57% Samaroli Fragments of Scotland
4 – Ardbeg 1974 31 year 51.8% cask 2751 Distillery Bottling
5 – Ardbeg 1974 24 year 51.3% casks 656+657 Signatory dumpy bottle
6 – Ardbeg 1975 13 year Special Selection 54.8% Intertrade Import (G&m)

There is not much in it between the 2 OMC bottles and the Samaroli and the 74 OB are probably as good as each other with the Intertrade vying for last place with the Signatory but winning out in the end.

I am not an Ardbeg fan because newer bottlings have a cheesy , sweaty socks aspect to the profile which has put me off wanting to drink the stuff, as these are 1970`s distillate they have none of this and are all pretty good.

Even someone like me can appreciate the quality which was evident to see with this H2H, with all things take into consideration this is the tale of the tape and final result.

1 - OMC 29 year
2 - 1974 OB
3= OMC 28 year
3= Samaroli
4 - Intertrade
5 - Signatory

I will add that the points spread was 89-92 so all are good examples but being completely honest none of them have a great depth of profile that I look for, a couple were one dimensional but being honest what was on show was good quality and I am sure Ardbeg fans would score these higher than I do and all of them are of a good standard.

That's quite a flight of whiskies! It's always a great opportunity to focus on a range like this and to compare drams especially cask strength whiskies. Cheers.

Lucky fella! Did you do this as part of a club or did you collect the bottles/samples over time? This sort of H2H is becoming increasingly difficult (read: expensive) to do without a decent community around you!
