1937 50 year Macphail's 40% Book of Kells Decanter G&M

Nose
Smells old to be honest, old waxed leather, hints of menthol, a little orange, cough candy, I am getting a few dark fruits, damson, plum sponge, milk chocolate, the cake notes seem to grow in the glass and after a few minutes a little wet grass and very faint peat but you really have to look for it.

Palate
Syrupy on the palate at first but then it thins out a little, there is a lovely blueberry & Turkish delight note a little Bakewell tart and then there is a wave pf sweet peat mixing with the fruity sherry, it is not overly pronounced but it is definitely there. A few bubble gum notes emerge.
After a while some caramel wafer comes in with a little raspberry syrup.
The palate is what I would call fragile but that is to be expected at 50 years old, just about keeping it together, some nice flavours in here.

Finish
Approaching medium, remaining pleasantly sweet with what can only be described as something similar to a well aged bourbon note (Pappy Van Winkle) even though this is obviously sherry.

This is undisclosed Macallan, and very nice, shame it was bottled at 40%, 45 would have been much better.
This is much better than the 1938 45 year Dram Taker's decanter, I like this sort of very delicate whisky.
