I had to google the norlan glass as it is the first I have heard of it, personally I stick to a copita style glass as I feel it gives me the most from a whisky but I do have a soft spot for different style whisky glasses and will no doubt pick up a norlan glass when I get a chance now I know about it.

I've heard nothing but poor reviews of the Norlan from my whisky pals...

They found it awkward to drink out of and that it did nothing for the nose.

The experience I have with a norlan is aligned with the existing literature: it does what it says on the tin, but it's not necessarily a good thing.

It does help dissipating alcohol without dissipating flavors and I did pick up different things when side-by-side comparing copita and norlan. But the same would be true if I compared a copita to a glencairn - I don't get more depth, just different things. And I get them faster, because of how I can lower the ABV more quickly by spinning like mad.

The downside is that I found my whisky will turn flat a lot faster. I like to sip my whisky while I watch a movie, read a book, play a game. Sometimes I down a dram in 30 mins, sometimes in 90. And leaving it in the glass allows different flavors to emerge, to change, to evolve. Slowly, but naturally. The norlan artificially speeds up that process - and it really does - but it's not something I am interested in or that adds any value to my whisky experience.

Especially at the price they go for, I see no use for them personally, but I do see why someone would be interested in them.

I'd agree with Drame Blanche. I have 2 Glencairn and 2 Norlan. They are nice glasses and I find them easier to drink out of (in a mechanical sense) but I prefer the Glencairn for nosing. Personally I find the Norlan dilutes the smell too much. Additionally they are expensive. I used to have a copita but a friend broke it! I ought to get another as I loved it.

I agree with the above. BUT I would say caviating what’s already been said - I ‘like’ a Norlan. Not only do I find it aesthetically beautiful - it works well with punchy drinks (think cask strength Edradour as an example). Give it 5 mins and it takes away the need for water whilst still (if you use a cover) maintaining the structure of the spirit. Yes evaporation exists but knowing that and choosing the right spirit makes a big difference.

I’d give an analogy. Running a higher RON like V-Shell makes little difference to my 72 beetle. But running something above 99 RON in my old drag car makes the WORLD of difference. Horses for courses.

I would add that they are very brittle and given the hand made nature they do have an occasional defect. I was bought these as a present (I wouldn’t have previously bought them) but I have to say the company were spot on in dealing with my issues so can’t fault them.

It’s a hybrid tulip glass meets tumbler without the weight. I for one wouldn’t criticise their attempts of thinking out of the box. Like Einstein said - better to have imagination than all the knowledge in the world. As knowledge is finite Wink
