|
|
I'm shortly moving to the Edinburgh area and would love a whisky-related part-time retail job (to keep my mind active and for the social interaction).
Can anyone in the sector give me any advice on how to pursue this goal most effectively?
Is it best just to circulate my CV with a covering letter (as I know some vacancies aren't widely advertised)? Or is there some other strategy which would work better?
Any help welcomed. |

| You could try dropping a line to the likes of Royal Mike Whiskies and even The SMWS but I would think it would be more bar staff the SMWS would be looking for, I would think a CV with a good covering letter outlining your whisky knowledge would be the best initial point of contact. If you speak other languages be sure to mention this as I am sure this would help given the number of oversea visitors the shops in Edinburgh see each year. Good luck |

there are plenty of more whisky shops to choose from but not my cup of tee tourist traps |

| Thanks. I have spent the last 'too many years' sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen. Just fancy something a little more people facing lol. |

| There is also Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian, Herriot Watt university that offers masters in brewing and distilling and I am sure some other options once you get up here. |

I think my advice would be 'don't be too picky'. What I've seen of the industry suggests that it's all about contacts, experience and word of mouth. If you're passionate, knowledgeable and people friendly then opportunities tend to pop up if you're already in some kind of related work and folk know you.
Get involved in some whisky clubs. Get along to some tastings. Frequent a few shops / bars to the extent you're on first name terms with staff. Chat about your interest in getting involved somehow and see what crops up.
Good luck! _________________ Inverness Whisky

| Holyrood distillery has just opened in Edinburgh not too long ago and I saw that they had some jobs available recently. Keep an eye on their website. What area in particular are you interested in? |

Speaking to Edinburgh Airport staff who are working on specific brand promotions, they stated that they are agency staff, brought in for that particular brand's event.
Might be a starting point for getting some experience. |

First Christmas in our new Scottish home. Walk on the beach to work up an appetite.
A thousand and one things to do early in the New Year - mostly involving buying furniture.
But then will start circulating my CV |
