|
|
Hi,
I have a bottle I’m looking to sell that I’ve had in the cupboard for a while. Not the sort of bottle I’d usually go for as I was gifted it. I don’t want to go down the auction route. I know sites such as Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange now buy bottles too. I was wondering if anyone had had any luck doing this and where they got the highest offers from?
Thanks in advance |

| Auctions would in most cases I would think fetch the best price when compared to what a whisky shop would offer you but for a quick sale a whisky shop may be your best option although I couldn't say whether whisky shops are buying bottles during the covid 19 pandemic, if they are I would expect them to offer you around 50% of what you may see the bottle selling for in a whisky shop. |

I've bought from a company called scotchgalore.com before.
The way they work is you decide how much you want for your bottle, send/take it to them and it goes on their website straight away. When it's sold you get your money within 48 hours
The main drawback is you have to wait until it sells to get your money. It may sell the first day it goes live, so if you're not desperate for money and want to get the price you require then it may be worth a look.
They're based in Coatbridge near Glasgow. |

| The Whisky Exchange no longer buys bottles as my brother in law had approached them about something similar that he had and he just wanted to offload in similar fashion to yourself. What is it about using auction houses that is off putting? If you are in Edinburgh, you approach RMW and see if they’d want to take it off you? Just whisky and whisky auctioneer both offer pick ups in Edinburgh from time to time or courier. |

| I contacted them a couple of years ago - TWE referred me to an auction site they're affiliated with, Master of Malt made quite a competitive offer. In the end I didn't sell the bottle but if I had I would've done so to MoM. |

Same experience here.
They say they buy bottles, and I've still recently seen "private collection" bottles come on their website, but when I've approached them they were not interested and said they were not buying. It's not because my bottles were "lesser" as the ones I was looking to offload were highly desirable and would have definitely sold for many £100's, a couple for a few grand, so not sure if they're only doing massive bulk buys of collections rather than the odd few bottles..... |

I've seen this website, although the only thing that I'm not too sure about is how much they actually manage to sell? In your opinion of browsing and using the site do you find that when bottles are priced sensibly bottles sell reasonably well? |

When I was last in picking up a bottle the guy was packaging half a dozen bottles for a customer from Asia. Very nice guy and we had a wee chat for a while.
As you say if you price your bottle reasonably then it should sell pretty quickly. It's the buyer who pays the percentage handling fees so you get what you price it at.
Worth maybe taking a trip through from Edinburgh and speak to him direct. Or give him a bell.
I don't really like auctions either, although I often stick in a cheeky bid in the hope of picking up a bargain. Very rarely works though. |

| Online auctions are a little bit problematic just now. But, in normal times, are a safe way to sell to a huge market. The big players take minimal or no seller's commission. |
