1960's Glenlochy x 3 H2H

Glenlochy 1965 32 year cask 1528 47.9% SV
Glenlochy 1969 25 year 62,2% Rare Malts OB

This was an interesting H2H the 2 X 65 are similar, both excellent with bags of fruit and hey both caress your palate, difficult to pick a winner but the Signatory gets the nod out of these 2 in a close battle.
The 69 Rare Malts is a bruiser, with crisp peat and again plenty of fruit, lighter but with so much power.
Probably not the fairest H2H where power is concerned, but the amount of peat in it surprised me and in my view this particular rare malt is a match in my view or very close to the 72 Brora for sheer power, when you play around with water the sweetness you can get is real quality.
So which one wins, well in final summary for different reasons the 65 SV, 69 RM, 65 DL in that order.
All 3 are quality, the 65's charm you, the 69 assaults you literally.

Tasting notes

1965 Douglas Laing
Nose
An old, fragile, slightly grumbly sherry profile at first. It almost teases your nose. It's a little sappy with plenty of stewed fruit like orange, peach, mango and a little apricot note mixed in with some subtle peat. There are also note of stroopwafel (Dutch Waffle) with hints of wood varnish.
Finally old books
There is a lot going on here.

Taste
A load of spice up front and a big wave of peat washes across your tongue with the fruit following behind. Its vibrant but also quite light, as the nose suggested it is a fragile whisky.
These are the sort of whiskies I really like.
The fruit seems to grow, as does the spice but then a really lovely orange note but a sweet orange note almost like a liqueur.
It is almost like you have had the best mouthwash in the world, this really does leave your palate feeling fresh.
Great balance.

Finish
Long finish, remaining sweet & fruity with a sweet peat edge to it

One of those old ,gentle sweetish whisky that give a two fingered salute to the whisky we have to put up with today.
My sort of whisky.


1965 Signatory (original note from 2016, no notes today.
Nose
Great, smells old earthy and fruity. I do detect some peat which reminds me of Lochside's from the same period (along with the fruit).
There is also some vanilla in the mix.
Waxy with old leather books and ripe plums and hints of orange,
Awesome

Taste
Sunstantial, full on the palate with a fruity fizziness but there is also something dirty in the mix (which I really like) almost gritty but much more refined than something like a Mortlach grittiness. It is almost like an old garage.
Plum, apple candied fruit, very sweet peatiness and some elegant sherry influence.
As you go on there is a little bitterness to counter act the sweetness but that just compliments the overall profile.

Finish
Not the longest but good medium length and its very very pleasant with a sweet kick at the end.

WITH WATER (few drops)

Nose
More fruit zest and hints of paraffin (the garage smell), restrained but really lovely. Still peaty and smoky but its all so delicate.
Still hints if vanilla

Palate
Hells teeth even at 47.9% abv it has opened up, its a fruit basket but also waxy with it.

Finish
Longer now and just stays on your palate.
Without doubt one of the finest whiskies I have ever tasted , absolutely superb.
Certainly the best Glenlochy I have had.

1969 Rare Malts
Nose
Light, fragrant, fresh & fruity sums this up nicely on the nose.
It is mainly apple & unripe pear with a flower note and yes there is some peat mixed with light sponge.
You can tell there is some power lurking in there somewhere
After a few minutes some cereal notes emerge.

Taste
A massive fruit punch between the eyes and then a huge peat blast before the fruit returns.
Initial taste is excellent, just a little drying. The is all on sherbet lemon, icing sugar and sweet peat but PPM must be quite high, this is like a less oily, sweeter and lighter Caol Ila, the peat is crisp and clean, excellent.
I initially put in 3 drops of water so I will add a little more to see if it opens up even more?
The sweetness on show here is lovely, it keeps coming in waves but the peat also grows, its never ending.
More water added.
Creamy now, the peat is still bashing my tongue about and the sweet fruit is a little more pronounced

Finish
Long, sweet, fruity peat that keeps coming in waves and seems never ending.

This is a monster of a whisky but a small sample will not be enough, because it really changes with water, 3 drops at a time, x 3 and you have similar but 3 different whisky.
This is one you really need to experiment with water to get the full monty as it where.
