So I've got room (a space allocated by SWMBO) in the drinks cabinet for around 15 bottles to be open at a time and I like a few options depending on my mood. Like many I guess, some nights I'm up for a quality complex dram, others I just want something easy and satifying to sip during a film.

I'm also still in the process of broadening my horizons from the heavy peater single malts I love and was weaned on. So I'm try to resist temptation and instead open more unpeated (or v.light peat) single malts, blends, vatted malts, grain, Bourbon, rum and others that take my fancy (had a great mezcal in a bar over summer and keen to explore those in due course). I've got about 35 bottles in the wings covering many of these options.

Currently I've only really worried about peated, unpeated and "other" trying to include three or more of each including both special drams and daily sippers.

How do you go about deciding what to open next? Simple mood on the day or do you make sure certain bases are covered? Do you think about regions or character in more detail (say coastal or speyside)?

I can have anything from 10 to 50 bottles opened at any one time with various fill levels. I do have a few regular everyday drinkers which I always have opened, single malts and blends. What I choose to drink just depends on what I fancy at the time.

Well said James.I concur with your approach and mine is much the same as yours (re number of bottles open and various fill levels). Even with many bottles open, I sometimes fancy opening even more whisky expressions from my stored whiskies/collection for any of a variety of reasons from curiosity to wanting to experience another cherished bottle. Though I enjoy single malts and blends generally, I have my preferences and many of my bottles fall into this category.

I have got a decent collection some collectable and quite a few for drinking and it's nice to be able to keep a wide range of whisky open depending on your mood and taste. I don't have any real preference for peated/non, scotch, irish, Japanese etc I just appreciate a great whisky regardless of country/style. Nothing to spectacular but I currently have open
Yamazaki 12
Nikka from the Bottle
Millstone oloroso sherry cask
Mackmyra Vintersol
Heaven Hill 9yr old corn whisky
Angel Envy bourbon
Buffalo Trace
Dalmore cigar malt
Old Pultney 12
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie
Talisker skye
Glenfiddich 18
Isle of Jura winter edition
BBR blended sherry cask
Johnnie Walker gold reserve

Winter is probably my favourite time to keep a few bottles open, it's nice to have a wide choice and not restricted to one type/style when the weather is cold outside. In the summer I tend to whittle it down to 4-6 open bottles as I don't really drink it as much
