I have spent quite a lot of time in Canada over the years and I keep playing with the idea of moving there from the UK.
But one of my big questions has been what can I do with my whisky collection?
I have a good size collection of which I am planning on opening some of them.
But I know buying Scottish whisky in Canada is expensive due to the import and local taxes. So I am just wondering if I was going to move there and I was going to bring my collection what would the cost be to import it? I do not seem to be able to find much info about the costs online.
As paying for storage in the UK while I am living in Canada just does not sit well with me. |

As a Canadian, I can make a few general comments about your situation. You probably know that Canadians cannot buy whisky from Europe and nor have it sent to a private residence in Canada. In fact, online whisky outlets in Europe will not sell nor send whisky to Canada due to our government regulations.
As for importing collections from another country to Canada- If you are a Canadian citizen living abroad but want to return to Canada, it is possible to bring a spirit collection to Canada but there are assessments and taxes.
"Shipping Alcohol When You Move Back to Canada"
If you are a former Canadian resident moving back to Canada and you want to ship alcohol to Canada (the contents of your wine cellar for example), contact the liquor control authority for the appropriate province or territory to pay the provincial or territorial fees and assessments in advance. To have your shipment released when you arrive in Canada, you will need to show the receipt for the provincial or territory fees and assessments and you will also need to pay the applicable federal customs assessments".
If you are not a Canadian citizen, my guess would be that even if it was possible the taxes and duties would be even higher. That's my best guess. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Thanks Murray
That is kind of what I was thinking would be the case and is going to play a part in what I do.. as I have some lovely bottles that I am really looking forward to opening one day. |
