Bruichladdich MCMLXXXV 1985/2011 50.1% - American Oak Bourbon Casks & Sherry Butts
Bruichladdich 25 year 1990/2016 48.1% - Pedro Ximénez / Oloroso / French Wine
1985 - 91/80/70
Nose
I like the nose on this one, the sherry is there but the spice from the bourbon barrels is vying for attention.
Treacle tart, figs, dates, a little pepper, very faint smoke, brown sugar.and then some faint orange which lifts the profile.
Palate
Fizzy, spicy but also woody bitterness at first so a few small drops of water are added but still the sweetness is overpowered which is a shame as the nose promised so much.
The fruit on show is unripe plum, a little bitter red apple, cheap coca cola, any sweetness has been well and truly overpowered.
Finish
Is shorter than I expected, with almost neutral flavours now, basically fades to obscurity.
1990 - 90/89/91
It is almost 5 years since I tasted this Laddie so tasting again to compare with another 25 year OB 25089.
Nose
Quite fresh the sherry is here, rich red plumb, juicy blackberry, fresh figs and something I can only describe as beefy?
Palate
Very rich, milk chocolate, perhaps some plain chocolate also, faint ginger spice and some damson jam, fruit cake notes and some dark treacle toffee.
Finish
The balance is more evident on the finish but even then a fruity blast of dark berries and spice blasts through.
Nice finish. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
