Bargains at auction

Hi guys, just thought I would mention the good side of auctions. I recently bought some good bottles from auction and just wondered if any of you use auctions to get hold of reasonably priced bottles?

I got 2 x Lagavulin 13 yo feis ile 2021 bottles for 120 each including postage, a couple Fortnum and Mason bottles Bimber for about 87 each including postage and a couple of Ben nevis for less than retail. The Lagavulins were £160 a piece at retail. Not a bad haul and not paid over the odds for any of them.

Admittedly I wasn't bidding on any of the Springbank / Campbeltown madness that has gone absolutely mad for some reason. More chance of buying a Rolex at cost price. Lol

I have had a few good bargains from auctions and I am always on the look out for more.There are certain whisky brands where you are very unlikely to find a bargain such as Springbank, the Macallan being another that comes to mind.

Yep, those are leave well alone. Bunnahabhain never sells well on secondary, and sometimes Bimber can be had at reasonable prices which is odd considering how quickly they sell out.

I haven’t bought as much lately from auctions as I have in the past but i agree you can often find some good whiskies for drinking at good prices.

I think Bimber has been well marketed and sells easily to Londoner’s and tourists but perhaps it has yet to be highly rated and sought after as a good whisky amongst whisky enthusiasts.

I think the other way to be honest, i think the high time for bargain lower end bottles of malts and blends was about 2 years ago,
Looking at the prices of some of the smaller auctions this week like The Grand Whisky Auction & Whisky.Auction tonight, some bottles are an eye opener price wise.
i t depends if you are a drinker or collector i suppose?

A few years back I used to buy Rare Malts bottles with a low neck level, even into the shoulder a bit as they were still fine to drink because they were at least 55%, you could get them for under £200, now you are looking at least £700.
i started buying old blends from the 1950's you could get them for £50 now they are hundreds.
Prices always go up but now they are going up exponentially, this is not down to drinkers as they would baulk at the prices.

It is whisky madness to me but i still,like many on here check out all the auctions just in case there is a bargain. I actually thought that with us coming out of Europe, the extra costs would frighten off mainland Euro punters but that does not seem to have slowed UK auctions down a jot. The thing is I have stopped buying from the Kruger auction in Germany as the extra costs made it impossible to get a bargain, certainly under £300.

The only advice i would give someone now is to get new releases of sought after bottles when they come out, otherwise all you will do is line the pockets of a flipper 3 months later.
Anyway there is always Old Pulteney for £25 on offer or Laphy 10 for £30 on offer, so there is still value whisky about.

I always set a limit to what I bid making sure it’s under RRP once fees and delivery are taken into account. If I win then good if I don’t then onto the next.
