I was reading a piece in the Telegraph about the possible rise in spirits duty in the 2010 budget.

Quote:
Under the "nuclear option" plan for increasing duty - designed to appease the health lobby and show that ministers are serious about tackling the problems caused by binge drinking - the cost of a bottle of spirits would rocket, along with the cost of spirit-based alcopops favoured by young drinkers.

A bottle of Bells whisky could rise from £14.79 to £23.73 while Gordon's gin, another favourite of middle-class drinkers, would increase from £12.79 to £21.17.

Even if Mr Darling imposed a less draconian rise, industry sources are braced for increases significantly above the five per cent already earmarked for beers, wines and spirits under the government's alcohol duty "escalator".

Personally i couldnt believe any government would implement such high rises this close to an election but then again politicians do the stupidest things.

I think as far as combating binge drinking i have to say the Tories pledge makes more sense to me and i am a life long Labour voter.
Quote:
The Tories, by contrast, have already pledged to increase the duty on alcopops and super-strength beer and cider without necessarily lifting the duty on spirits.

Surely they would not be stupid enough to impose such an increase but as you say Alastair "politicians do the stupidest things. "

You cant trust any politician from any party, the Tories pledge states without necessarily lifting the duty on spirits which to me means they are not stupid enough to announce they will raise spirits duty until they are elected.

Whisky and other spirits will always be an easy money maker for governments and they just need raise taxes under the the health reasons banner and there will not be much oposition.

As usual it'll be the majority who suffer because of the minority causing the problems. If the price of normal spirits go up by that amount, imagine the rise in price of premium drinks such as single malts...not something that will affect the so called binge drinkers.

If these rises are implemented, i personally dont think the rise in the cost of the alcholpops will be significant enough to stop the young binge drinkers but the rise in the price of premium drinks such as malt whisky may stop a lot of sensible drinkers from purchasing at all and this will effect sales, taxes raised and jobs.

I agree Crane, i dont think these rises are the answer and i think whoever is in government will know that tax increases are not the answer but it is an easy way for them to raise funds.
