Staff at the Whyte & Mackay whisky bottling plant are threatening a walkout over alleged bullying and harassment. They claim bosses have failed to resolve a string of grievances.

Several managers at the Whyte & Mackay plant in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, have been named in complaints about shouting, finger-pointing, bottle-smashing and other intimidating behaviour.

In the latest incident, an employee was said to have been hit by a heavy door allegedly yanked open by a supervisor who was infuriated by a production line fault.

Unite union regional officer Gillian McKay said: "The bullying culture is endemic at the plant.

"We have people feeling physically sick before going into work because they are worried about what they are going to face."

At a branch meeting last month, Unite members voted unanimously to take part in a consultative ballot.

The result will be announced on March 17. Officials are confident they will get a mandate for a strike vote.

McKay said: "What we used to call industrial language is no longer acceptable.

"We have made several attempts to resolve this informally but it is just continuing.

"We are trying to show senior management the strength of feeling among members and we are confident they will support the ballot."

A company spokesman said: "We do not comment on individual complaints of bullying, as staff confidentiality is important to us. We take any accusations like this seriously."
