Whilst for the last 20odd years I've always enjoyed a drop of single malt and usually had a bottle in my drinks cabinet, until recently I've never really taken a great deal of interest in the subject;until now!!

I've just returned from a short break in Scotland and tasting the various whiskies has really increased my interest. Apart from trying out new (to me) malts in pubs/hotels etc, I was fortunate enough to stumble across the superb Loch Fyne Whisky Shop in Inverary. The staff were extremely knowlegable, helpful and patient.

Whilst there I purchased the following and would be interested to hear members opinions on these malts:-

Talisker 10yo 20cl x2 bottles
Caol Ila 12yo 20cl
Clynelish 14yo 20cl
Lagavulin 16yo 20cl
Cragganmore 12yo 20cl
Edradour 10yo 70cl
Highland Park 12yo 70cl
Tomintoul 10yo 5cl
Tomintoul 16yo 5cl
Tomintoul 27yo 5cl

I also tasted some Bruichladdich(not sure what type), Glenmorangie QuintaRuban,Tobermory 10yo, and Tobermory 15yo.

Of all those above I would have to say, in my opinion, the two which stood out as outstanding are Edradour and the Talisker.

Apparantly Waitrose have several malts on offer including GlenLivet 18yo and Laphroaig 10yo so I might go tomorrow to add these to my collection

Hi David and welcome to the SMW forum

The Loch Fyne Whisky shop is a great shop with very helpful and knowledgable staff and always worth a visit when in that part of Scotland They have guided you to some very good malts, they are all good drams. The ones you bought which i particularly like are the:

Talisker 10 which is a bit smoked, malty, spicy peppery excellent quality malt for your money, often on offer in the big supermarkets making it a great buy.

Clynelish 14, a peaty spicy Highlander.

Lagavulin 16 is a very deeply smoky, peaty dram, you will either love it or hate, i love it

Cragganmore 12 is a great example of a Speyside malt, sweetish, malty.

Highland Park 12 this has a bit of everything, lovely heather honey sweetnes, hint of smoke, malty. If you like this you will love the Highland Park 18 which is one of the best malts you can get for your money in my opinion.

Tomintoul 16.the best malt Tomintoul has to offer, a nice dram.
I havent had the pleasure of the Tomintoul 27 year old yet but had heard it is a decent whisky.

The Glenlivet 18 is a great whisky and a great buy if on offer and if you enjoy the Lagavulin i am sure you will like the Laphroaig 10.

David i am jealous it has been a few years since since i was last in the Loch Fyne Whisky Shop in Inverary, they were always very helpful in the shop and knew there stuff. That is a great selection you have and i am sure you will enjoy them all. As far as the Glenlivet 18 it is a great dram and as Crane says if you like the Lagavulin you will also enjoy the Laphroaig.

My experience of Edradour is a bit hit and miss and unfortunately more miss. I found it to be an inconsistent malt, some bottles are much better than others. Kind of put me off it.

Having now tasted the Glenlivet 18yo I can definately agree it's a superb drink. I also noticed today that Solar(Co-op) have the 12yo with a third off at only £18-50!! Seems pretty good value to me.

The Edradour 10yo that I have is absolutely sublime. Fron the research I have done on the internet it appears that the product didn't used to be so great several years ago, altough there are several glowing reports from drinkers many saying it's the best they've ever tasted, so I'd definately recommend trying it again if you weren't so impressed a few years ago

That is a great price for the Glenlivet 12 which is also a great whisky, i always like to start with a Glenlivet 12 then move on to an 18 then perhaps a Glenlivet Nadurra 16 year old cask strength which i think is also superb.

Interesting that you find it good David as i was way less than impressed with it a few years back, i may have to seek out some of the more recent stuff they have produced.

Mark i recently picked up a bottle of Nadurra at the airport without paying much attention to it and when i got it home i realised i had picked up the 48% ABV bottle but it turned out to be as good if not better than the last Nadurra cask strength i had.
