Gordon & Macphail have just released the Mortlach 70 Year Old under their new Generations range label and it is now the oldest single malt Scotch whisky in the world.
You can read more about it here:

I just love the fact that they have released a whisky that is older than me, i see fewer and fewer of them these days. Wasnt the previous oldest Scotch whisky a 1938 Speymalt Macallan 65 year old. There must be something about sherry casks that stops the wood totally making the whisky undrinkable after a load of years. Anyway a little out of my price range, i will just have to make do with the tasting notes William has posted.

£10000 for the 70cl bottle and only £2500 for the mini, are you then not better off buying 4 of the 20cl bottles and getting 80cl for £10000.

Alastair | Thats odd as minis usually work out more expensive.
William do you know how many bottles are available, i would assume it is a very very limited release.

Yes Mac that was the the previous oldest Scotch whisky in the world record holder, i actually got a taste of it last year. G & M have now spoiled it for me, i can no longer claim i have tasted the oldest whisky in the world.

Yes your right Blakey it is a very limited release, you dont get much out of a cask after the angels have been taking their share for 70 years. There will be only 54 standard 70cl bottles and 162 of the 20cl bottles released worldwide.

I make that a total of £945000 for the lot, not bad for an old nearly empty barrel of whisky. I wonder if it really does taste any good after all these years.

I wonder why they only released it in 2010 when they bottled it in October 2008.

Bookie | My guess is that they had to take it out the barrel while there was enough whisky left at a decent alcohol level but then they decided not to release such an expensive premium whisky into a market that had just been hit by a bad recession, so they held it back a while. As i said just my guess.
