Ardbeg and
Glenmorangie scoop 19 awards between
them from two of the most influential
industry competitions.
Glenmorangie and Ardbeg single malt
Scotch whiskies have between them won 19
coveted accolades at two of the most
influential industry awards which are
usually a good indication of which
whiskies are worth adding to your must
try list.
Among a host of category wins and gold
medals for both Distilleries,
Glenmorangie was hailed as the Best
Scotch Highlands Single Malt by the
World Whiskies Awards (WWA). Meanwhile,
Ardbeg was handed a rare platinum medal
by the San Francisco World Spirits
Competition (SFWSC) – an award reserved
for a handful of spirits – deemed near
the pinnacle of achievement. These
successes are recognition of the
industry’s respect for both
Distilleries, which are owned by The
Glenmorangie Company.
Glenmorangie, which has been crafting
its single malt whisky in the Highlands
since 1843, delighted WWA judges with
Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989,
which they described as "mind-blowingly
good". The whisky, from its Bond House
No. 1 Vintage Collection, won Best
Scotch Highlands Single Malt, as well as
the 21 Years and Over category.
At the SFWSC, Glenmorangie won a total
of nine gold and double-gold medals.
Again, Bond House No. 1 performed
strongly, with double-golds for
Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1991 and
1993, alongside Glenmorangie Signet and
the latest Private Edition release,
Glenmorangie Allta. Gold went to three
whiskies from the Distillery’s core
range, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban,
Glenmorangie Lasanta and Glenmorangie
Nectar D’Or, with two more for the
prestige expressions Glenmorangie 18
Years Old and Glenmorangie 19 Years Old.
Ardbeg also won two WWA categories. Ardbeg Ten
Years Old triumphed in the 12 Years and
Under, and Ardbeg Corryvreckan in the
Non-Age Statement section. Limited
edition Ardbeg Twenty Something won a
gold. Meanwhile, at the SFWSC, Ardbeg
Uigeadail outshone the competition.
Receiving a double-gold, it was then
lauded with a new platinum medal, an
achievement awarded only to a few which
have won double-gold for three
consecutive years.
Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling,
Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks at The
Glenmorangie Company, said: "I’m
delighted to see the judges celebrating
so many whiskies across our
Distilleries’ ranges. Not only did they
praise Glenmorangie’s Vintage
Collection, Bond House No. 1, designed
for connoisseurs, but also Glenmorangie
Lasanta, which appeals to whisky
newcomers and aficionados alike. And
Ardbeg Uigeadail’s outstanding platinum
award demonstrates that for smoky malt
fans, there’s almost nothing better."
