The GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Review

27th April 2022
The GlenAllachie add a 8 Year Old expression to their core line-up, a creative marriage of spirit aged in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry puncheons, along with virgin oak casks and red wine barriques.

The GlenAllachie 8 Year OldThe GlenAllachie 8 Year Old is a new permanent addition to the distillery's core range.

This new young dram is the creative work of Billy Walker who is renowned for his exceptional wood management and blending skills, and who this year celebrates reaching his 50th year in Scotch whisky.

To create The GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Billy has hand selected and married together spirit aged in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry puncheons, along with virgin oak casks and red wine barriques.

This new GlenAllachie 8 Year Old follows in the footsteps of highly successful younger releases from the distillery, such as The GlenAllachie 10 Year Old which was recently named World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2021, and having now tasted the new 8 Year Old myself I can say Billy has put together another outstanding dram and it is great to see that it will be an ongoing, accessibly priced (UK RRSP £42.50) addition to The GlenAllachie core range.

The GlenAllachie 8 Year Old is bottled at 46% ABV and as you would expect for the full natural flavour experience it is non chill filtered and naturally coloured. You will find it available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Hard To Find Whisky and Master of Malt

The GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Demerara sweetened raisin and sultana intertwined with honey and caramel, a little sugared almond and ginger lurks enticingly in the background.

Taste: Delicious sweet treacle toffee accompanied by some luscious dark sherried fruit, a delicious mix of fresh and burnt raisins and sultanas, lead, not far behind is a touch of orange and dry ginger, a wee touch of oaky vanilla and coffee also breaks through from behind the lovely dark fruit, some late ripe cherry and cinnamon.

Finish: The sugared almonds are back with a wee bit of a milk chocolate coated puff candy and coffee edge, the ginger and cinnamon peak before slowly bowing out with the dark fruits to leave some gentle slightly drying oak spice and a wee touch of liquorice.

Comment: A deliciously juicy sherried dram that does not disappoint, there are some top quality sherry and wine casks at play here for this young whisky and the virgin oak brings a nice touch of spice, a very well put together whisky and another cracking whisky from Billy Walker. It is delicious from the nose to the lovely long finish, hence the big score for the young sherried dram and a very welcome new addition to The GlenAllachie core range.

SMW Score 91/100
