GlenAllachie 9 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish Review

18th July 2024
Review of the new GlenAllachie 9 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish, an outstanding example of how a good single malt finished in a quality sherry cask can create such a deliciously tasty dram, and it shows just why Oloroso sherry butts are so widely used in the whisky industry.

GlenAllachie 9 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask FinishThe GlenAllachie 9 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is one of the first 3 of 6 Sherry Cask finished drams in the GlenAllachie's new Wood Collection Series.

Each whisky in the new ‘Sherry Series’ in the the GlenAllachie Wood Collection has been aged for 9 Years, each began its journey in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels before being transferred to carefully chosen Sherry casks.

The series will undoubtedly give whisky drinkers an interesting insight into the different types of sherry cask finishes and what they contribute to a whisky.

Oloroso, the darkest dry Sherry style is subjected to extensive oxidative ageing and is renowned for its pronounced nutty, dried fruit qualities. The final period of maturation in former Oloroso sherry butts has resulted in this limited edition Scotch whisky.

Bottled at 48% ABV, non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, it has a RRP of £60

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Honey and toffee infused with sweet raisin, apricot and almond. Some distant pepper.

Taste: Smooth, deliciously rich and vibrant. Burnt sweet raisins and apricot arrives with a wee bit of a dark chocolate edge, rich butterscotch, toasted almond, a lovely touch of a zesty orange & lemon mix, some oak and ginger adds a bit of spice to the flavour party in the mouth. A wee touch of late pepper.

Finish: A deliciously long finish, dried sweet sherried fruits just cling to the mouth for an age, eventually bowing out leaving some lovely peppery sweet oak spice to have the final word..

Comment: An outstanding example of how a good single malt finished in a quality sherry cask can create such a deliciously tasty dram, and it shows just why Oloroso sherry butts are so widely used in the whisky industry. If you you want to educate yourself on the differences between different types of sherried whiskies then work your way through this series or if you simply enjoy a quality sherried dram again work your way through this series. Cheers to Billy Walker for coming up with the idea of this series and creating (so far) 3 of 6 top quality sherry finished drams. And they wont break the bank at £60 each. Looking forward to the next 3 releases in the collection.
