Whisky Focus - Scotland Gets A Taste Of History as Glenfiddich Hand Over 50 Year Old

Glenfiddich Hand Over Precious 50 Year Old

13th January 2011
Scotland enjoys a taste of whisky history as Glenfiddich hands over precious 50 year old liquid.

The world’s most awarded, and UK’s number one, single malt Scotch whisky Glenfiddich, has released the much-celebrated Glenfiddich 50 Year Old to two whisky specialist outlets in Scotland.

With only two bottles of the rare and precious expression available in Scotland, Justin Lyle of First Drinks, placed both into very safe hands and they are now available to purchase from both Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh and Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin.

At £10,000 a bottle, this pioneering whisky from leading independent drinks company William Grant & Son, comes decorated in Scottish sliver, crafted by Thomas Fattorini, a sixth generation silversmith, and imprinted with William Grant & Son’s own hallmark.

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old Tasting Notes

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Glenfiddich 50 year old is imbued with a unique preciousness that only time can bring, and remains remarkably light and elegant on the palate.

Nose: Beautifully harmonious with an uplifting, vibrant and complex aroma.

Taste: Initially sweet with a zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, which then cascades through a wonderful series of layers: aromatic herbs, floral and soft fruits, silky oak tannin and hints of gentle smoke.

Finish: The finish is exceptionally long with a touch of dry oak and the merest trace of peat.

Other Available Glenfiddich 50 Year Olds

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old:
70cl 43% ABV

Bottled in 1991 in a limited edition of just 500 bottles, this whisky came from a batch of nine casks laid down in the 1930s (one cask was laid down for each of William Grant's nine children, who had helped to build Glenfiddich distillery in the 1880s). One of the bottles set a record in the 1990s when it fetched 99,999,999 lira at an Italian charity auction. The whisky itself is, perhaps unsurprisingly, quite oaky (without being overpoweringly so), and has an elegant, complex palate of subtle dried fruit flavours.

Available from The Whisky Exchange £10,200

Glenfiddich 1955 Private Vintage 50 Year Old :

A very rare old single cask Glenfiddich, distilled in 1955 and bottled in August 2006 at over fifty years old. This Private Vintage single cask was originally bottled for the travel retail market.
