Glenmorangie
Ealanta, a limited edition 1993 vintage
19 year old whisky with an American
twist.
 Glenmorangie have announced the 4th
addition to there popular Private
Edition range, the Glenmorangie Ealanta
(Scots Gaelic for ‘skilled and
ingenious’) is a 19 year old expression
of Glenmorangie which has been fully
matured in virgin American white oak
casks with a provenance that stretches
all the way to the mountains of Missouri
and the Mark Twain National Forest.
As most of you here already will know the type of cask used to mature
Scotch whisky has a major part to play
in the final flavour of the whisky and
the use of virgin oak casks is quite
unusual as most American oak casks used
in the Scotch whisky industry have
usually previously contained bourbon.
Therefore the interaction of the
delicate Glenmorangie floral spirit from
their very tall stills directly with
this ‘virgin’ wood should make for many
intriguing flavours.
Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's
Distilling and Whisky Creation Director
commented, "New wood also imparts a
purity of flavour that I think many
Glenmorangie aficionados will find an
interesting divergence from our previous
Private Edition releases.
"Using virgin oak casks that have been
heavily toasted adds huge mouth-filling,
buttery, creamy, vanilla flavours –
somewhat like a crème brulée topped with
almond and marzipan. This makes for a
lovely rounded and complex expression of
Glenmorangie."
The Glenmorangie Ealanta marks the
fourth release in the ongoing
Glenmorangie Private Edition Range,
previous releases were; the very highly
rated Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX - a full
bodied whisky, extra matured in Pedro
Ximénez sherry casks, followed by the Glenmorangie Finealta - an exquisite recreation of a
1900s recipe from the Glenmorangie
archives with subtle notes of peat, and
last year’s release of Glenmorangie
Artein which was extra matured in rare
Tuscan wine casks.
Bottled at a strength of 46%, and non
chill-filtered for extra texture and
mouth feel, the Glenmorangie Ealanta is
available globally from January 2013.
The Ealanta has an RRP of £74.99
which is a not a bad price for a
Glenmorangie limited release of this
age.

Producer's Tasting Notes:
Nose: Glenmorangie Ealanta has a soft toffee and butterscotch
aroma, then vanilla and a curious strong
hint of stewed fruits with a hallmark
Glenmorangie top note of menthol.
Taste: Candied orange peel, sugar coated almonds and sweet
vanilla are to the fore, wrapped in an
unusual nuttiness reminiscent of Brazil
nuts in toffee.
Finish: Very long with virgin oak derived spices such as
clove, ginger and a hint of aniseed.
