Glen Scotia
introduces third release in the Icons of
Campbeltown series inspired by the
Scottish legend of the Wulver.

Glen Scotia has launched the third
expression in its Icons of Campbeltown
collection — a five-part annual series
celebrating the rich history and
folklore of Scotland’s former Victorian
whisky capital.
This limited-edition unpeated Tawny Port
Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt
takes its inspiration from the Wulver, a
legendary creature featured among the
saints and beasts carved into
Campbeltown’s medieval market cross — a
centuries-old gathering point for
storytelling at the heart of the town.
Dating back to the 14th century, the
market cross is covered with intricate
stone carvings of saints, warriors,
mythical creatures and adversaries —
each telling a story from different eras
of Campbeltown’s history. These enduring
details reflect the spirit of the
community in one of Scotland’s smallest
and most storied whisky regions.
Among the carvings, the figure of a wolf
conjures tales of the Scottish Wulver —
a creature said to have the body of a
man and the head of a wolf. Unlike
darker legends of witchcraft and fear,
the Wulver’s story is one of kindness
and generosity. He is said to have lived
alone in a cave on a wooded hill,
spending his days fishing and leaving
his catch on the windowsills of those in
need. This compassion and quiet strength
echo the generosity and resilience that
define Campbeltown’s whisky-making
heritage and Glen Scotia’s own legacy
spanning nearly 200 years.
Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3 pays
tribute to the Wulver’s enduring spirit
and the medieval carvings that inspired
the legend. Crafted by Master Blender
Ashley Smith, this unpeated 12 Year Old
single malt was matured in hand-selected
bourbon barrels before being finished
for nine months in ex-Tawny Port casks.
The result is a whisky brimming with
flavours of red fruits, forest berries
and dark chocolate, culminating in a
long, rich finish marked by Glen
Scotia’s signature maritime character.
To visually capture the Wulver’s legend,
Glen Scotia once again collaborated with
acclaimed artist John Holtzman, known
for his work with Disney, Marvel, and
Macmillan, continuing his creative
contributions to the Icons of
Campbeltown series.
Ashley Smith, Master Blender for Glen
Scotia, said: "The ancient market cross
that inspired the Glen Scotia Icons of
Campbeltown series gives us an exciting
starting point to experiment with the
single malts to match the mythical
icons. For the third release in the
series, I wanted to create a unique
12-year-old expression using the finest
Tawny Port casks to finish the whisky,
which have imparted rich fruity flavours
paired with the subtle maritime notes
that are a well-loved distinction of
Glen Scotia."
Iain McAlister, Distillery Manager and
Master Distiller at Glen Scotia, added:
"Our distilling community knows a thing
or two about supporting each other in
times of need, just like the Wulver did,
as the tales are told. That same bold
Campbeltown spirit is still very much
alive in the town today and it is this
character and quiet generosity which
Glen Scotia is honouring in this latest
instalment in our Icons of Campbeltown
series."
Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3 is
bottled at 51.7% ABV and priced at £80.
It is available via Glen Scotia’s
website, at the distillery’s visitor
centre in Campbeltown, and exclusively
through Fortnum & Mason. This release
follows the first two editions in the
series, inspired by the Mermaid and the
Dragon — both motifs featured on the
town’s historic market cross.
