Review of the
ex-bourbon cask matured and Oloroso
sherry cask finished Jura 12 Year Old.
The
Jura 12 Year Old was launched back in
2018 when the Isle of Jura distillery
boldly launched a complete new core
range.
Matured in American White ex-bourbon
barrels for 12 years and then finished
in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez,
Spain, it is bottled at 40% ABV.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Quite a rich malty nose, honey with a
dark chocolate edge infused with subtle
Jura peat smoke, a wee touch of
saltiness, a mild fruity mix of lemon
citrus, raisin, and peach.
Taste:
Creamy dark chocolate coated raisin
sultana, peach and nut sweetened by
sugars and infused with some lovely
subtle mouth coating Jura peat smoke, a
wee bit more saltiness than the nose
told you to expect, a late touch of
bitter coffee, a touch of honeyed zesty
lemon and a little pepper and ginger.
Finish:
Deliciously long, the sherried fruits
bitters out first leaving some lingering
subtle peat smoke, coffee, pepper and
some slightly drying oak.
Comment:
The wee touch of saltiness is a nod to
Jura's coastal home and the subtle
thread of Jura's unique peat smoke which
runs from nose to finish along side the
the balance of sherry and bourbon cask
influences has made this a very
enjoyable dram. Often found for
around £34 in the likes of
Amazon
with free delivery, it is certainly
worth that price.
SMW Score 88/100
