Whisky Focus - Tenkyo Distillery In Japan Unveils KAZE Founder's Reserve Legacy

KAZE Founder's Reserve Legacy

4th July 2025
Tenkyo Distillery proudly pays tribute to its late founder, Shunsuke Koike, with the release of KAZE Founder's Reserve LEGACY—a distinctive blend matured and bottled in Aizu, where Scottish spirit meets Japanese craftsmanship.

KAZE Founder's Reserve LEGACYTenkyo Co., Ltd. (Tenkyo Distillery) was founded in 2018 as an alcohol production and sales company, combining the Tenkyo Distillery for whisky production and the Eisen Sake Brewery for Japanese sake production. It is based in Bandai Town, Aizu, Japan, and although it is yet to release a Japanese single malt whisky it has just announced the forthcoming release of a rather unique blended whisky, KAZE Founder's Reserve LEGACY, which will be available from July 6, 2025 in Japan.

KAZE Founder's Reserve LEGACY is a blended whisky matured, blended, and bottled at the foot of Mt. Bandai in Aizu, Japan. Crafted through a bespoke solera system, each release carries forward the legacy of 189 casks—filled with Scottish malt and grain new make spirit, personally selected by the late founder, Shunsuke Koike.

It is neither Scotch whisky nor Japanese whisky. Born in Scotland, raised in Aizu. A fusion of cultures and terroirs, bound by EN (縁)—the invisible thread of connection.

These 189 casks were laid down as part of a bold and pioneering maturation project while Tenkyo Distillery was still under construction. Featuring 58 distinct cask types, it was a visionary journey into the possibilities of oak, spirit, and time.

Today, the KAZE Founder’s Reserve solera system draws directly from these original casks, ensuring that Shunsuke’s legacy lives on in every bottle. This first release, aptly named LEGACY, stands as a quiet yet enduring tribute to his remarkable vision.

I haven't had the chance to taste it myself so I can't comment on its quality but the official tasting note is below to tempt you when it finds its way to these shores where it began its journey.

Although not yet available here you will find a great range of Japanese whisky available f
rom specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt
