Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old Review

25th November 2022
Review of the peaty Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 year old from the Loch Lomond Distillery's Island Collection.

Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year OldThe Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old first launched back in 2017, it was created to be a celebration of soft smoke and warming spice and I would say that it is just that.

This full-bodied expression is created from a combination of whisky from the distillery’s two pot still styles, before maturing in a mix of re-charred American oak and Bourbon American oak casks, giving it that rich warm flavour and making it the perfect expression to enjoy during the cold winter months.

The peaty Inchmoan single malt takes its name from one of the many islands found in Loch Lomond and rather appropriately ‘Inch-moan’ is Scottish Gaelic for ‘the island of the peat’ and for centuries, the mainland inhabitants around Loch Lomond used Inchmoan Island as their source of peat fuel for village fires.

You will find the Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old alongside the rest of the Loch Lomond whisky range (which offers some good whisky for the price tag)
available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, Hard To Find Whisky and Master of Malt

Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old Review

Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A little vanilla infused with some gentle ashy peat smoke, a lovely enticing barley sugared sweetness and some distant mandarin orange and mango fruitiness.

Taste: Lovely sweet ashy smoke and peppery oak spices fill the mouth, not far behind is a delicious gentle candied fruitiness, the orange and mango fruit from the nose which has been joined by some pear, vanilla lurks in the background.

Finish: A lovely long finish where the orange and mango fruitiness bows out first, followed by the smoke leaving roasted coffee, a touch of liquorice and a lovely drying gentle peppery oak spiciness.

Comment: I have to admit that I haven't had a bottle of this since it first came out back in 2017, it was pretty good then and it has gotten even better, it has lost its wee touch of feintiness, it is now a deliciously peaty Highlander with a nice wee fruity edge to it and a lovely touch of peppery oak spice. The 46% ABV bottling strength simply adds to the flavour pleasure. If you are looking for a Christmas gift for a friend or relative or indeed a new peaty dram to pour for yourself over Christmas or these cold winter months I am more than happy to recommend this one.

SMW Score 90/100
