Method And
Madness Rye and Malt the first release
of a whiskey distilled at the Midleton
Micro Distillery the innovative
experimental distillery located within
the Midleton Distillery in County Cork.
Irish
Distillers launched their Method and
Madness whiskey range back in early 2017
and at the same time they unveiled to
the world the Midleton Micro Distillery
located within their Midleton Distillery
site in County Cork which has now been
in operation since 2015.
The Midleton Micro Distillery is not a
24 hour per day, 7 days per week set up
producing the maximum capacity of
whiskey it can, the Micro Distillery is
an experimental distillery, an outlet
for the whiskey makers at Midleton where
both master and apprentice whiskey
makers, can experiment and use their
innovation.
Fast forward to today and those innovative
folks at Midleton have unveiled the
first aged experimental distillate
created at the Midleton Micro
Distillery to be released to date, Method And Madness Rye and
Malt.
Method And Madness Rye and Malt has been
created by Irish Distillers’
next generation of innovative whiskey
makers, hand-crafted in the Micro
Distillery under the care and creativity
of Distiller Katherine Condon, who
originally joined Irish Distillers as
part of the company’s Graduate Distiller
Programme in 2014.
The whiskey is said to represent the
young team’s fearless and relentless
approach to trial and error. First
experimenting in the lab to discover the
ideal ratio of 60% rye to 40% malt,
Condon and the team then took advantage
of the Micro Distillery’s manual
processes, trailing varying rates of
reflux and distillation to achieve the
perfect crisp yet spicy flavour.
The Micro Distillery team
double-distilled the mash of 60% rye and
40% malted barley and laid it down to
mature in ex-bourbon American oak
barrels and the resultant and aptly
named whiskey, Method And Madness Rye
and Malt, has now been bottled as all
whiskey should be, non chill-filtered,
naturally coloured and at a very
palatable flavoursome strength of 46%
ABV.
Celebrating the launch of Method And
Madness Rye and Malt, Katherine Condon
comments: "It has been an honour to be
part of the Micro Distillery team from
its inception in 2015 to today, sharing
the first ever drops of whiskey produced
there with the world".
Condon drew inspiration from the
personal notebooks of John Jameson III
dating back to 1857, where the inclusion
of rye was recorded in various mash
bills.
"We have been inspired by the innovators
in Irish whiskey who came before us. In
turn, we have questioned tradition and
challenged convention to follow their
inspiration and drive the Irish whiskey
category forward for a new generation of
creators, consumers, and indeed,
suppliers", she explains.

Eva O'Doherty, newly appointed Distiller
at the Micro Distillery, adds: "While
this whiskey has been maturing, we have
not rested on our laurels. We have
continued in earnest to experiment with
new mash bills. It is a great privilege
and responsibility to help shape the
future of Irish whiskey, and Method And
Madness Rye and Malt represents the
first in an incredible pipeline of
innovation from this distillery.”
Method And Madness Rye and Malt has a
RRP of £95 and is available at Dublin
airport as well as from specialist
online whisky retailers such as
The Whisky Exchange
and

Method And Madness Rye and Malt Review

William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Lemon zest infused barley sugar, a touch
of sweet coconut with a delicious gentle
peppery spicy edge.
Taste: The crisp rye takes the
lead role amongst the lemon zest and
delicious sugars which has been joined
by some melon, a little vanilla and
honey, deliciously peppery, spiced oak,
a wee touch of liquorice.
Finish: The fruit slowly bows out
and the barley sugars and rye spices
hang in their for an age.
Comment: Loved it! Yes it is a touch youngish but still a
very flavoursome, spicy, pleasure
experience, the fresh fruity rye on the
nose leads to and equally pleasurable
tongue tingling spicy ride and a lovely
long sweet spicy finish all with a
lovely fruit infusion. Will this 60% rye
to 40% malt mash bill go into full
production at Midleton, I certainly hope
so.
SMW Score 92/100
