New Irish
blended whiskey Molly Malone targets
international markets, launching in
travel retail at Dublin airport and it
is as sweet as its namesake, Sweet Molly
Malone.
Molly
Malone Small Batch Irish Whiskey is the
inaugural whiskey from The Molly Malone
Whiskey Company.
Small Batch is a no age statement Irish
blended whiskey created with a blend of
Irish single malt and grain whiskies
from a number of undisclosed Irish
distilleries and crafted in small
batches.
The whiskey was matured in second fill
American ex-bourbon casks, Quercus Alba,
a high grade American white oak where
the bourbon has already tamed the casks
somewhat by absorbing much of the
intense coconut and vanilla tannins
found in new wood.
The whiskey has been bottled at 40% ABV
and given its name, Molly Malone, it
should very much appeal to the tourist
and gift market but that is no bad thing
as there are already some outstanding
Irish whiskey brands available in the
tourist/gift marketplace such as The
Irishman and The Quiet Man that would
rival some of the best Irish whiskey's
out there.
Molly Malone whiskey takes its name from
the enigmatic heroine of the famous
Irish folk song of the same name which
is widely recognised as Dublin’s
unofficial anthem. "In Dublin's fair
city, where the girls are so pretty, I
first set my eyes on sweet Molly
Malone", the song tells the fictional
tale of a fishwife who plied her trade
on the streets of Dublin.
Richard Lombard-Chibnall, the founder of
the Molly Malone Whiskey Company, is no
stranger to the whisky industry in fact
some of you may recognise independent
bottler Lombard Scotch Whisky who was
one of the founding independent bottlers
of the whisky industry back in the 1960s
when there were very few around, the
company began to lay down fillings at
the distilleries and hold, mature and
bottle from its own stocks.
Richard Lombard-Chibnall spent 30 years
working for the family company, Lombard
Scotch Whisky, latterly as Global Brand
Director. Richard’s family have traded
in wine and spirits since the late 17th
century and became a sought
after independent whisky bottler from
the 1960's onwards due to the quality of their
bottling's and were noted for there "The
Jewels of Scotland" range of single malt
whiskies.
Richard Lombard-Chibnall commented:
"Molly Malone is in the DNA of the Irish
and we have created an initial product
which has been very well-received and
that we are very proud of. We have major
plans to grow the brand internationally
and make Molly Malone Irish Whiskey
become known as the go to drink for ‘a
celebration of Ireland’."
Rather
sensibly travel retail is among the key
channels being targeted to sell and
promote Molly Malone Small Batch, it is
now available from Irish travel retailer
Aer Rianta International at Dublin
Airport.
The Molly Malone Whiskey Company has
appointed Garry Maxwell of GMAX Travel
Retail to handle the Molly Malone
brand’s expansion in the duty free
channel. Of Garry Maxwell’s appointment,
Richard added: "Garry has worked in
travel retail for over 40 years in all
forms of the business and is excited to
be working with such an iconic brand
name as Molly Malone. Equally, we are
delighted to secure his experience and
services for taking Molly Malone into
more airports and other travel retail
locations across the world."
As I said Molly Malone Small Batch Irish
Whiskey is currently available from
Dublin airport but I am sure you will
see it appearing in specialist whisky
shops in the near future in fact I see
that there is a seller on
Amazon
now offering it |
Molly Malone Small Batch Irish Whiskey Review

William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Sweet vanilla icing sugar, a little
toffee, some distant coconut and some
delicate sweet citrus notes of orange
and lemon lurking in the background
along with the finest touch of oak spice.
Taste:
A smooth and gentle barley sugar candy
sweetness, vanilla, a very light zesty
mix of orange and lemon, a lovely light
touch of coconut and oak spice hanging
around the background adds to the
pleasure.
Finish: A lovely
medium length finish, some creamy
vanilla and a mild barley
sugar sweetness still tries to hang in
there along with the coconut which has
stayed the distance, the fruit has
morphed to a touch of tangy pear, a gentle
mildly drying oak spice has the final
say.
Comment: A deliciously sweet and gentle Molly Malone from
nose to finish, this is a light very
easy drinking Irish blend where the
lovely gentle oak spice builds after a
few mouthfuls. As I said a deliciously
sweet and gentle Molly Malone now if
they had chosen to bottle this at 46% -
50% like the old Lombard bottling's used
to be bottled at I suspect that this
could be outstanding, as it is it is
still a sweet, gentle, very smooth,
youngish and very easy to drink Irish
blended whiskey that would make a great
gift for any Irish whiskey drinker.
SMW Score 83/100
