PRAKAAN
Thailand's first single malt whisky
begins worldwide roll out of their
Tribura Series, 3 whiskies, 2 unpeated
and 1 peated, all produced in a very
Scotch like way but matured in quite
unique underground warehouses.

International Beverage has announced the
global launch of PRAKAAN, Thailand’s
first premium single malt whisky,
following its successful debut in
domestic and Asian markets last year.
This launch marks a significant
milestone for the company, adding a bold
new dimension to its award-winning
portfolio of spirits.
Crafted at the PRAKAAN Distillery in
northern Thailand, the range will debut
with three distinctive expressions:
PRAKAAN Select Cask, PRAKAAN Double
Cask, and PRAKAAN Peated Malt. Each
whisky is said to showcase Thailand’s
unique natural resources and
craftsmanship, setting a new benchmark
for the country’s presence on the global
spirits stage.

PRAKAAN Thai single malt whisky will initially
be rolling out to the UK, France, and
Germany in 2025—with the USA and
additional markets to follow with its
international expansion.
The
PRAKAAN Distillery Production Process
PRAKAAN sources its production water
from a natural spring located 200 to 400
metres underground. The barley—both
unpeated and peated at 45 ppm—is
imported from the UK. Milling is done
using a Bühler roller mill with a
capacity of 3 tons per hour.
The mash tun is a stainless steel vessel
with a 40 m³ volume, designed to process
8 tons of malt per batch. Fermentation
takes place in 12 stainless steel
washbacks, each with a 40 m³ capacity,
and lasts for 65 hours.
Distillation is carried out using copper
pot stills crafted in Scotland by
Forsyth & Sons Ltd. The first
distillation uses two ball-shaped wash
stills, each 6.58 metres tall. The
second distillation is done in two
similarly shaped spirit stills, each
standing at 5.59 metres.
Interestingly maturation occurs in two
subterranean warehouses built 3 metres
below ground and covered with 4 metres
of soil for natural climate insulation.
Each warehouse can store between 30,000
and 50,000 casks. The whisky matures in
a combination of American ex-bourbon
casks and Spanish ex-sherry oak casks,
stored on pallets for efficient aging
and space management.
Strangely specific details about the
distillery's initial production date are
not publicly available, I would guess it
was at least 3 or 4 years ago, but that
is just a guess. I cant put even a rough
age on the whisky, and as I haven't had
a chance to taste it I cant comment on
its quality but it certainly sounds
interesting. Will it show maturity
beyond its years like many whiskies
produced in Asia, I cant say that either
but I hope so.
Distinctly Thai Origins
PRAKAAN is distilled in Kamphaeng Phet,
a province located in Thailand’s Western
Forest Complex, a pristine UNESCO World
Heritage Site. This rich environment,
with its hot, humid climate and abundant
natural spring water, creates ideal
conditions for producing high-quality
whisky. The distillery’s name,
PRAKAAN—meaning "wall" or "fort"—pays
homage to the ancient fortifications
that once protected the region.
Introducing the Tribura Series
The inaugural Tribura Series, named
after the three fortified layers of
Kamphaeng Phet’s ancient wall, reflects
the whisky’s deep roots in Thai history,
culture, and craftsmanship. Using pure
local spring water and matured in a
combination of American Oak ex-bourbon
casks and Spanish Oak ex-sherry casks,
PRAKAAN’s whiskies are aged in two
expansive underground warehouses
designed for optimal maturation in
Thailand’s tropical climate.
Each of the three expressions is said to offer a
unique flavour profile, yet all share
signature notes of tropical fruit and
rich vanilla sweetness—hallmarks of
PRAKAAN’s distinctive Thai character.
This launch marks a new chapter in
global whisky, with PRAKAAN leading the
way for Thailand’s emergence as a
premium whisky producer.
Commenting on the global launch,
Veronica Amago, Global Sales Director at
International Beverage said: "This is a
historic day for our business and for
Thailand as we launch the country’s
first ever single malt whisky onto the
world stage. PRAKAAN Distillery is the
result of care, precision and skilful
planning, and our whisky is defined by
the skill and expertise of our
formidable whisky creation team in
Kamphaeng Phet. The recently awarded
inaugural Tribura Series is a
celebration of their achievement. We are
proud and honoured to be sharing it with
the world today."
