Review of the
Indian Cabernet Sauvignon red wine cask finished
Rampur Asava Indian single malt whisky.
Back
in October 2020 Radico Khaitan, one of
the oldest whisky distillers in India, added
Rampur Asava to their Rampur Indian
single malt whisky range which has been
distilled and matured at the Indian
drinks company's huge Rampur distillery
at the foothills of the Himalayas in
Uttar Pradesh, what makes this release
stand out is its rather unique cask maturation.
Rampur Asava is the first single malt to
have been matured in American ex-Bourbon
Barrels and then finished in
Indian Cabernet Sauvignon red wine casks
made from French oak.
Indian whisky matures significantly
more quickly than other whiskies, such
as Scotch and Irish, due to extreme
weather conditions the interaction of
the liquid with casks is very high and
maturation is very quick. This also
results in a very high angel’s share
(evaporation). It has been said that
ageing of malt whisky in India is 3 to 4
times faster than in Scotland.
The
combination of Rampur’s distillation
and the unique casks used for maturation of Rampur
Asava certainly gives the new Indian
single malt a firm traditional Indian
heritage but as I am sure the
knowledgeable whisky drinkers will well
know the choice of wine cask used to
finish even the best of whiskies can
make or break that whisky.
Rampur Asava is non-chill filtered and
bottled at 45% ABV, and is priced around
£65, it is currently on offer at
The Whisky Exchange for £60. See
below for what I think of the
Indian Cabernet Sauvignon red wine finished
dram.

William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A sweetish aromatic fruity cocktail of
cherry, cognac infused apricots, raisin
and rose oil, a touch of milk chocolate,
a little vanilla and peppery oak spice
lurking in the background.
Taste:
Rose oil infused honey leads followed by
some apple and apricot, a little nutmeg
and pepper, a late appearance of some
lovely slightly drying oak spices.
Finish:
The delicious fruit cocktail bows out
first leaving the Turkish Delight rose
oils clinging to the palate for an age,
a mild touch of the slightly drying oak
spices also stays the distance.
Comment:
The Turkish Delight rose oils seem to be
a common thread through the Rampur
single malts, and no different here, the
fruits from the
Indian Cabernet Sauvignon red wine
finish has made this quite a easy
drinking red wine infused fruity
pleasure.
