Review of the
Redbreast 21 year old which Jim Murray
recently named 'The Worlds Best Irish
Whiskey'.
 If you caught the Whisky News
headlines at the end of last week you
would have noticed that Jim Murray has
named the Redbreast 21 Year Old Single
Pot Still Irish whiskey as the Second
Finest World Whisky Of The Year in his
recently released
Whisky Bible 2018, which is not a
bad accolade considering Jim has
reviewed over 4,500 whiskies from around
the world for his Whisky Bible.
Jim scored the Redbreast 21, which sits
at the top of the Redbreast core range,
at a near perfect 97 out of 100 points,
which also places it as his ‘Best Irish
Whiskey of the Year’ and ‘Best Irish Pot
Still Whiskey of the Year’ for the
second year running and the third time
in four years since its launch in 2013.
The recognition from Jim of the quality
of the Redbreast 21 tops off an already
very rewarding year for the mature pot
still whiskey where it has picked up five
top gongs around the world, including
gold medals at the 2017 San Francisco
World Spirits Competition, International
Spirits Challenge and The Irish Whiskey
Masters, in addition to scores of 95 and
97 out of 100 at the Beverage Testing
Institute and Ultimate Spirits Challenge
respectively.
Billy Leighton, Redbreast Head Blender,
commented on the latest award, saying:

Midleton Distillery who has helped to
make Redbreast such an enjoyed whiskey.

encouraging to see traditional Irish pot
still whiskey take one of the top spots

Redbreast 21 in 2013 and we were doing
our tastings, we knew we had something
special on our hands so it is great to
see this appreciation shared by people
across the world. This award is a
testament to the team at Midleton and
especially to my predecessors who had
the foresight to squirrel away those
casks that helped us to bring Redbreast
21 to the world."
Following the announcement last week
I thought I would revisit the Redbreast
21, so I got my bottle out the cupboard and
poured myself a few drams over the
weekend and I can reconfirm my original
review of the whiskey from when it was
first launched back in 2013 still rings true.
The only
downside is that the Redbreast 21 was difficult enough
to get hold of before this latest accolade
given its already established popularity
and the fact that it is only available
in limited amounts due to its age, it is now going to be very difficult
to get hold of given the influence Jim
Murray's
Whisky Bible has on whisky sales but
hopefully
the Redbreast whiskey makers at the Midleton
distillery have a whole load of the stuff ready to
bottle.
As I said you may now struggle to get
hold of a bottle of the Redbreast 21 but
if you can you will not regret it, but
don't overlook the rest of their core
range which is equally outstanding, and
a little easier on the pocket, this
includes the:

to keep looking if you are after a
bottle of the Redbreast 21, sadly my
bottle is now finished after the weekend
so you are not along in wanting a
bottle.

Redbreast 21 Year Old Review

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Packed with that unique Irish pot still
fruitiness with just a touch of sherry
fruitiness in there also. The fruit
makes way for vanilla and mild pot still
spices.
Taste:
Soft creamy vanilla, juicy barley, a
lovely Demerara sweetness, layers of
rich fruit, touch of nuttiness. The
delicious mild pot still spices increase
with each mouthful, menthol at the end.
Finish:
Long. Dark chocolate, raisin and
pineapple, mildly drying oak and slowly
fading pot still spices.
Comment:
This truly is an outstanding Irish Pot
Still whiskey,
absolutely brilliant from nose to finish. The
balance of fruit, spice and oak is
perfect. I have awarded it a couple more
points than my original review in 2013
but my tasting note still rings very
true. A must try for Irish pot still whiskey
drinkers, a deliciously juicy mature
Irish single pot still whiskey.
