Ian Macleod Celebrate Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards

Ian Macleod Distillers excel at the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards 2015

Ian Macleod Distillers, one of Scotland’s leading, independent, family-owned distillers is celebrating after being crowned a double winner at the national Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards.

The company scooped the coveted Drinks (alcoholic) category with its 25YO Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky and the Brand Success of the Year category, an award recognising the strength of the market research and development, marketing initiatives and overall marketing strategy for the relaunch of Tamdhu Distillery and Tamdhu Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

The winners were announced on Wednesday 27th May at a glittering awards ceremony, hosted by Scottish television presenter Kaye Adams, at Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland. With 19 award categories celebrating excellence across Scottish food and drink, the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards showcased a broad spectrum of food and drink companies from across the country with a record breaking 239 entries, up 56% from 153 entries in 2014.

Commenting on the awards, Iain Weir, Marketing Director from Ian Macleod Distillers, said: "We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the wonderful successes of the business. These awards showcase the best food and drink producers in Scotland and so we feel honoured to have won two awards. This achievement recognises the hard work across the company including all the teams at both Glengoyne and Tamdhu Distilleries and our head office."

The award judges tasted 161 food and drink entries and examined submissions from 116 businesses across all the categories.

Ian Macleod Distillers acquired Glengoyne Distillery in 2003. It launched the award-winning Glengoyne 25 year old in March 2014. The malt is a bright amber beauty with red fruits, leather and brown sugar on the nose and soft oak, cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville marmalade tang on the palate. The finish is very long with spicy liquorice.

Tamdhu Distillery was acquired by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011 and was reborn in 2012. The distillery officially re-opened with two bespoke events during the 14th annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2013.

Both the Tamdhu and Glengoyne whisky ranges including the excellent Glengoyne 25 year old are available to purchase from specialist whisky shop The Whisky Exchange

Glengoyne 25 Year Old Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  A lovely fresh clean nose, a brown sugar sweetness, big sherried fruitcake notes just urging me on to have a taste.

Taste: A silky smooth delivery of juicy dark sherried fruit, burnt raisins, orange. A light touch of sweet vanilla tablet peaks through from behind the deliciously rich dark fruit  A lovely touch of cinnamon and ginger.

Finish: Long lingering dark sherried fruit that is juicy to the end and a lovely slowly drying mild oak spice.

Comment: Big sherried drams are often described as tasting like fruit cake but in this case I would describe this as a luxury fruit cake. This really is a top quality big rich sherried whisky and it is fitting that it now sits at the top of the Glengoyne core range and hats off to Glengoyne for bottling it at 48% ABV which adds to the taste experience. The price tag is a big ask at around £155 more than the superb Glengoyne 21 year old but if you have deep pockets or are looking for something very special to spoil yourself then I guarantee this won't disappoint if you like a big sherried whisky. I think I now need to revisit the rest of the Glengoyne core range.

SMW Score 92/100
