‘Sherry Cask Takeover’ takes centre
stage in May at this year’s edition of
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s annual
festival.

The Scotch Malt
Whisky Society’s Flavour Hunters
festival in May promises an immersive
exploration of sherry cask maturation,
with a line-up of exclusive events
spanning the UK. Kicking off with
screenings of a documentary filmed in
Spain’s ‘sherry triangle’, the festival
boasts special whisky releases and
tasting sessions throughout the month.
As whisky enthusiasts gear up for the
bustling festival season in Scotland,
the Society’s own event takes centre
stage with a 'Sherry Cask Takeover'.
Commencing in late April, the festival
launched with the release of bespoke
Speyside festival bottles, featuring
intriguing names like Tawny Garibaldi
and Heritage Puddings Follow Breakfast.
The Spirit of Speyside Week commences on
April 29th with a captivating Scotch and
sherry tasting at the esteemed
Craigellachie Hotel, known for its
proximity to distilleries and
breathtaking Highland vistas.
Festivities escalate with the unveiling
of Lowland and Highland bottling's on
May 10th, presenting delights such as
Philosopher’s Stone and Take Me to the
Chippy.

Marking the festival's climax,
Campbeltown and Islay bottles will be
unveiled on May 17th, showcasing
treasures like Viking Toothpaste and
Smuggler’s Bacon. The grand finale
unfolds on Islay with an SMWS takeover
at The Ballygrant Inn, featuring a
peated whisky exploration led by an SMWS
Ambassador, accompanied by a sumptuous
three-course dinner prepared by chef
David Graham.
The Society's presence extends to The
Indie Bottler Festival and the Islay
Book Festival, offering masterclasses on
peat and sherry maturation, allowing
attendees to delve into the rich
tapestry of flavours while sampling
handpicked drams. Festival-goers can
also indulge in a special screening of
the Society's latest documentary, Scotch
and Sherry: A Flavour Odyssey, at The
Machrie hotel, unravelling the intricate
journey of sherry cask creation with
insights from the Society's Head of
Whisky Creation, Euan Campbell, as he
traverses Spain's sherry heartland.
Anne Phillips, marketing director at the
SMWS, said: "The Flavour Hunters
Festival is one of our annual
highlights, and this year we look
forward to sharing our sherry expertise
and our new festival bottling's with our
members across the country.
"We enjoy getting out and about to bring
our exceptional drams to whisky fans
attending the Scottish festivals,
meeting old friends and making new ones
as we do so. We are always on the hunt
for new flavours, and really do offer
something for everyone to enjoy."
Members of The SMWS will have the
opportunity to experience the festival
from the comfort of their local venues,
as tasting events are set to take place
in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London.
