Whisky Focus - The SMWS Release 2 Contrasting Nantou Taiwanese Whiskies

If you enjoy discovering unique whisky distilleries from around the world, you might want to explore two intriguing single malt releases from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, both distilled at Taiwan’s Nantou distillery.

In celebration of their distilling anniversary, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has unveiled two Taiwanese whiskies that showcase its commitment to delivering unexpected flavour experiences.

These five-year-old single malts, both distilled on March 30, 2018, and matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, share the same origins but diverge dramatically in character.

The SMWS Higher Power Society Cask No. 138.31 is described as Light & Delicate, offering notes of honey, citrus, and soft florals. Meanwhile, The SMWS Full Throttle Coal Scuttle Society Cask No. 138.24 is boldly Peated, and is said to deliver intense smokiness, charred oak, and deep earthy richness.

"This is what makes single cask whisky so exciting and it’s a perfect example of the type of flavour adventures we offer at the Society," says Euan Campbell, Head of Whisky Creation at the SMWS.

"Two casks from the same distillery, filled on the same day, yet they offer completely different taste experiences. It’s a fascinating look at how one distillery can produce big differences in flavour. To fully explore the experience, I’d encourage whisky lovers to try them side by side, either at home or in one of our Members’ Rooms."

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is celebrated for its outstanding single cask releases and flavour-driven philosophy, providing members with exclusive access to rare whiskies, expert selections, and a dynamic whisky community.

Both of these bottles are available for £79.50 each for SMWS members, if you are looking for more info or if you are interested in joining The SMWS membership starts from £100 and is available to purchase here www.smws.com/whisky-club-membership
