Calling
all whisky chasers, The SMWS have a
special membership offer, membership to
the Scotch Malt Whisky Society plus a
bottle of their new release Old
Fashioned, the Society’s first
beer-matured blended malt.
 Calling
all whisky chasers this month at The
Scotch Malt Whisky Society they're
celebrating the timeless pairing of
whisky and beer. With their
ever-changing selection of bottlings and
endless flavours to choose from, the
SMWS can make the perfect partner for
any 'hauf & hauf'.
The SMWS also loves a bit of
experimentation, and they have unveiled
the Old Fashioned – a blended malt
bottling matured in an IPA cask from a
local Scottish brewery.
The Old Fashioned is the Society’s first
beer-matured blended malt, it came about
after they sent Tempest Brewing Co in
the Scottish Borders some first-fill
Kentucky bourbon casks, which they used
to mature their powerfully hoppy Double
IPA – known as Old Fashioned.
They returned the casks for the SMWS to
mature an 11 year old Speyside whisky in
them for another 14 months, before then
they blended that with selected malts
from first-fill sherry hogsheads.
 The
result is the Society’s very own Old
Fashioned, named in honour of the Double
IPA that preceded it.
They say that the flavours from the
blend of whiskies and the different
casks they’ve been matured in has given
Old Fashioned a balance of sweet, herbal
and citric notes, similar in character
to the Old Fashioned cocktail that the
whisky has been named after.
Of
course you can always have a 'hauf & hauf'
and pair it with a
beer of your choice.
