Powerful Peat and Maritime Character define The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Peat Plants II Collection.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society Peat Plants II

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has unveiled the second chapter in its acclaimed Creators Collection with Peat Plants II — a bold quartet of limited-edition peated single malt Scotch whiskies that celebrate the rugged, untamed spirit of Scotland’s Western Isles.

Launched on October 10, the Peat Plants II collection delves deep into the medicinal heart of peated whisky, drawing inspiration from the windswept coasts of Islay and Mull, where the peat is laced with seaweed, lichen, and salt air. Each of the four bottling's showcases the Society’s dedication to capturing the elemental drama of Scotland’s most evocative landscapes.

The line-up includes:

  • The SMWS Tarred and Heathered Society Cask No. 3.360 (Bowmore) – a 21-year-old Islay whisky offering tropical fruit notes and hints of honey-cured peat-smoked salmon.

  • The SMWS Ocean Blossom Society Cask No. 29.297 (Laphroaig) – a 19-year-old Highland expression with maritime depth, barnacle-scraped intensity, and steamed samphire nuances.

  • The SMWS Maritime Drift Society Cask No. 42.88 (Tobermory) – a 31-year-old Islay bottling reminiscent of a boat builder’s workshop, with smoky pears, butterscotch, and honey-glazed lobster.

  • The SMWS Beachside Smokehouse Society Cask No. 53.504 (Caol Ila) – a 26-year-old Islay whisky delivering smoked dates, habanero bacon, and smoky liquorice root tea.

The full collection will be available for £1,200, with individual bottles priced between £135 and £455.

Where the original Peat Plants explored the diverse sensory character of Scotland’s peatlands, Part II narrows its focus to their most potent and uncompromising expressions — whiskies that embody the raw power of rain-lashed moors, sea-sprayed coastlines, and centuries of elemental influence.

Euan Campbell, Head of Whisky Creation at the SMWS, said: "This collection celebrates the powerful and medicinal nature of West Coast peat. We have selected a variety of expressions from Islay along with some similarly robust whisky from the Isle of Mull. These phenol-packed casks cover a spectrum from deeply tropical fruit and smoke through to intense carbolic character. There’s so much flavour diversity to be found in this collection, in both spirit style and cask type. A real celebration of peat."

The Creators Collection series debuted last year with the original Peat Plants release, offering whisky enthusiasts a curated exploration of distinctive flavour stories, production methods, and cask maturations. More releases from the range are set to follow in the months ahead.

Founded in Edinburgh in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society is renowned for its pioneering approach to single cask and single malt bottling's, as well as its exclusive blends and Single Cask Spirits. Now owned by The Artisanal Spirits Company (ASC) plc, the Society has bottled whiskies from over 180 distilleries in Scotland and beyond, releasing dozens of new single malts every month.

Today, the SMWS has a thriving global membership of 41,000, offering access to four exclusive Members’ Rooms in Leith, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London, alongside a network of more than 100 partner bars worldwide. With a variety of tailored membership options, the Society continues to unite whisky lovers through a shared passion for flavour, discovery, and craftsmanship.
