Review of the
SMWS Alchemy 10 Year Old, a blend of
single malt whiskies from the five
whisky regions of Scotland. An enjoyable
balanced dram with layers of heather
honey, raisin, and treacle up front,
gently wrapped in peat and wood smoke. A
touch of stem ginger, salt, and
liquorice adds complexity without
overwhelming the palate.

This year, The
Scotch Malt Whisky Society has been
celebrating Scotland’s whisky festivals
in a refreshingly unconventional way—by
releasing a collection of specially
selected casks that challenge
expectations and surprise the senses.
These unique expressions showcase
flavours and styles you wouldn’t
typically associate with certain
distilleries or regions, inviting whisky
lovers to explore a path less trodden.
In the spirit of innovation, the Society
also set out to craft a small-batch
blended malt using components from each
of Scotland’s five whisky-producing
regions. The result? This SMWS Wandering
Alchemy 10 Year Old, a characterful dram
brimming with layers of honey, delicate
wisps of smoke, which they say is a
nostalgic nod to "old-school" blends of
the past.
The SMWS Wandering Alchemy 10 Year Old
is a small-batch blended malt, which
marks a significant first for the
Society, crafted from whiskies sourced
from each of Scotland’s five
whisky-producing regions: Speyside,
Highlands, Lowlands, Islay, and
Campbeltown, these whiskies were matured
in a selection of ex-American Bourbon,
Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez, and HTMC
hogsheads.
The SMWS Wandering Alchemy 10 Year Old
has been bottled at 58.4% ABV and is
available to SMWS members for £70. You
