Strathearn's
Liam Pennycook wins Young Talent award
at Scotland Food & Drink Excellence
Awards
Strathearn
distillery has announced that their
young Head Distiller, Liam Pennycook,
has won the "Young Talent" award at the
prestigious Scotland Food & Drink
Excellence Awards, which took place last
night (18 May).
Liam, who is 24 years old, was one of
only three individuals shortlisted for
the award, out of a record number of 272
entries across all 22 categories. The
awards took place at a glittering
ceremony and dinner held in the
Edinburgh International Conference
Centre (EICC).
Liam joined the team at Strathearn
Distillery, which is widely considered
the home of handcrafted spirits in
Scotland, nearly three years ago and
quickly helped diversify the small
Perthshire-based distillery. Acquiring
the role of Head Distiller, he has been
at the forefront of spirit production,
creating unique products such as
Distillery Strength Gin at a whopping
60.5% ABV, Strathearn’s first single
malt and now, a spiced and golden rum.
Liam, commented on the awards
saying, "I’m absolutely over the moon to
be crowned winner in this category.
"I’m so proud to work in this
progressive industry that promotes and
praises innovation and creative
thinking. An industry which is
experiencing increased productivity,
innovation and profitability is an
obvious attraction to anyone starting
out in their career. That’s what
attracted me to Strathearn. I am now
able to say I’m Head of Distilling at
Strathearn but also involved in
innovating the industry as a whole,
contributing to market development and
export.
"Winning this award will only further
drive myself and the team at Strathearn
Distillery. It encourages me to do
everything I can to be a part of the
growing movement to establish Scotland
as the land of food and drink and to
make my mark on the industry."
Organised by Scotland Food & Drink and
in partnership with the Royal Highland
and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS),
the Awards celebrate innovation,
enterprise and quality in the Scottish
food and drink industry.

mature, the Strathearn distillery have
released a series of malt spirits which
Liam has produced, aged in a variety of
different wood types as well as a
selection of Strathearn Gin which are available from
