White Heather 15 Year Old Review

2nd May 2022
Review of the White Heather 15 Year Old, a quality blend which can easily give any single malt of this age a run for your money. It is a deliciously complex mix of single malts presented on a bed of solid grains.

White Heather 15 Year OldWhite Heather 15 Year Old is the second release in the relaunched White Heather premium Blended Scotch whisky brand from the folks at The GlenAllachie distillery.

The White Heather 15 Year Old contains the same percentage mix of malt and grain whiskies that was in the White Heather 21 Year Old that relaunched the brand last year, a mix of 47% Malt Whisky and 53% Grain Whisky.

The 53% grain whisky component is made up of two contributing grain whiskies with a 25% and 28% split.

The contributing single malts which accounts for 47% of the blend is made up of 20% Speyside Malt, 23% North Highland Malt and similar to the 21 year old and bringing a bit of peat 4% Islay Malt.

The contributing whiskies were primarily matured for 12 years in a combination of Sherry Butts, 1st Fill American Barrels and 2nd Fill Barrels and Hogsheads. They were married together by Billy Walker and then laid down for a further 3 years in a selection of Pedro Ximénez Puncheons, Oloroso Sherry Puncheons and American Virgin Oak with a medium toast/medium char.

You may note that the contributing cask type recipe for this new 15 year old is very similar to the 21 year old launched last year which may mean the style and flavour profile of the different expressions in the relaunched brand will be along similar lines with the main difference between them being the time spent maturing in the casks offering whisky fans an interesting comparison regards the effects of maturation time.

Commenting on the launch of the White Heather 15 Year Old, Billy Walker reveals: "This has been a real passion project for me. It takes me back to my first forays in the industry and allows me to select and blend whiskies from across Scotland in order to achieve the intended flavour profile. I hold a strong belief that interest in the Premium Blend category is growing, and we very much want to be at the forefront of it with White Heather."

The White Heather 15 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky was bottled at 46% ABV, naturally coloured and non chill filtered and has a RRP of £59.99.

White Heather 15 Year Old Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Honeyed toffee abetted by some mandarin orange is joined by a touch sweet sugared almond and raisin. Just the very slightest touch of coffee and peat lurking in the background.

Taste: Toffee infused with a delicious mix of honey, vanilla, orange, raisin, grapefruit, plum and oak spice leads, this is quickly joined by a very gentle coffee/peat mix, a little ginger and sugared almond.

Finish: The honey and orange now with a lovely gentle peaty edge has stayed the distance, the sugared almond peaks along with some ginger and oak spices before bowing out after an age.

Comment: A quality blend which can easily give any single malt of this age a run for your money. It is a deliciously complex mix of single malts presented on a bed of solid grains, full of favour, it gets a wee bit spicier and a wee bit peatier after a few mouthfuls, just loved it.

SMW Scotch Blended Whisky Score 92/100
