White Heather 21 Year Old Review

2nd May 2022
White Heather 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky was the first release in the relaunched White Heather whisky brand. A premium blend which is the creative work of The GlenAllachie Master Distiller Billy Walker.

White Heather 21 Year OldIn March 2021 The GlenAllachie Master Distiller Billy Walker honoured his blending roots in the whisky industry with the relaunch of the White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky brand which he acquired along with the purchase of The GlenAllachie Distillery back in 2017. Billy relaunched the brand with the release of a White Heather 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky expression.

In the creation of the White Heather 21 Year Old Billy capitalised on his 50 years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, he sourced single malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland.

Experimenting and blending them together in the GlenAllachie distillery lab with an emphasis on care and attention to detail Billy created a recipe with a particularly high malt whisky content for a blended whisky.

The White Heather 21 Year Old contains 47% Malt Whisky and 53% Grain Whisky.

The 53% grain whisky component is made up of two contributing grain whiskies with a 23% and 30% split.

The contributing single malts which accounts for 47% of the blend is made up of 20% Highland Malt, 23% Speyside Malt and bringing a bit of peat 4% Islay Malt.

The contributing whiskies were primarily matured for 18 years in a combination of 1st Fill American Barrels, Sherry Butts and 2nd Fill Barrels and Hogsheads. They were married together by Billy Walker and then laid down for a further 3 years in a selection of Pedro Ximénez Puncheons, Oloroso Sherry Puncheons and Appalachian Oak with a medium toast/medium char.

The resultant White Heather 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky was bottled at 48% ABV, naturally coloured and non chill filtered.

You will find White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Hard To Find Whisky and Master of Malt

White Heather 21 Year Old Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A gentle enticing nose beckons you with spiced heather honey, toffee, raisin, a little slightly candied apple and bourbon, some gentle orange and lemon add to the fruit mix, old oak grains and some distant peat lurks in the background.

Taste: Some lovely butterscotch infused with a fruity mix of orange, lemon and apple piggyback in on the grains and oak tannins. Some sugar sweet raisin and a very gentle mix of milk chocolate and peat smoke add to the pleasure experience.

Finish: The honey, orange, old oak spiced grains entertain well into the longish finish helped very much by the flavoursome bottling strength of 48%.

Comment: The very gentle peat comes more to the fore with each mouthful and so does the delicious oak contribution to this mature single malt and grain whisky mix, the sugars cling to the palate and build with each mouthful. First pour was good but this won me over after a few pours, delicious very easy to drink stuff and clearly related in style to the recently launched outstanding White Heather 15 year old blend.

SMW Scotch Blended Whisky Score 90/100
