Review of the
single malt rich, peaty, Compass Box
Glasgow Blend which is now presented in
a 70cl bottle.
Conceived
as a contrast to Artist Blend, it
represents the bold, fearless and
humorous personality of the Glaswegians.
One of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks,
the statue of the Duke of Wellington,
which has had various traffic cones
placed on its head for the past 30
years, is on the new label for Glasgow
Blend as it is a symbol of the city’s
sense of humour.
This is an old-school peaty blended
Scotch whisky, originally created by
John Glaser in 2014, that draws on an
historical reference that Glaswegians
have long preferred bigger, smokier
whiskies.
The Glasgow Blend in contrast to the
Artist Blend has an even
higher proportion of single malt
whiskies, it contains 35.2%
Cameronbridge single grain whisky
matured in a First Fill Bourbon Barrel,
29% Aberlour single malt matured in a
First Fill Sherry Butt, 18.2% Laphroaig
single malt matured in a Refill Barrel,
9.9% Clynelish single malt matured in a
First Fill Bourbon Barrel, 5.1% Aberlour
matured in a Revatted Sherry Butt and
2.6% is a custom Highland blended malt
matured in a Custom French Oak Cask.
The Compass Box Artist Blend is bottled at 43% ABV, non chill filtered
and naturally coloured and I am pleased
to say is now presented in a 70cl bottle
with a RRP of £37.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Vanilla toffee infused with sweet
slightly earthy peat smoke and a mild
mix of gentle tangy and candied orange
which hovers in the background along with a
little vibrant oak spice.
Taste:
A deliciously sweet, slightly earthy.
peat delivery see's the peat arrive
piggy backing on Demerara sugars and
sweet vanilla closely followed by but
not outdone by some rich sherried fruit,
some late oak spice.
Finish:
Lovely gentle vanilla sweet peat smoke lingers long into the finish
along with some sherried oak which
eventually fades to leave some lemon citrus and
mildly drying oak.
Comment:
Maybe it is because I am personally more
connected to
Glasgow than Edinburgh that I enjoyed this Glasgow Blend
slightly more than the
Artist (Edinburgh) Blend, or perhaps
it is simply that with the addition of peated whisky to
the mix a slightly more interesting
whisky has been created, both blends are
outstanding for the price and both rival
any single malt in this price range for
quality and pleasure and just like the
Artist Blend it is great to see the
Glasgow Blend now bottled in a 70cl
bottle. For its price tag I would highly
recommend this, a great value dram in
today's marketplace.
